Why use our Isopods in your pet's habitat?

Isopods are commonly used in terrariums for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is that they serve as natural cleaners, effectively removing any decaying matter or waste in the terrarium. This can help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold, making the environment healthier for your plants or other animals. Additionally, isopods can help improve soil quality by breaking down organic matter and adding nutrients to your pet's substrate to create a bioactive ecosystem. They also contribute as a food source for other animals in the terrarium, such as reptiles or amphibians. Overall, isopods are a valuable addition to any terrarium ecosystem.

How to care for Isopods

Isopods, or pill bugs or sow bugs, are easy to care for and make great additions to any terrarium or vivarium. Here are some tips on how to care for your isopods:

1. Housing: Isopods need a moist and humid environment to thrive. Please provide them with a substrate that can retain moisture, such as coconut coir or sphagnum moss. You can also add leaf litter or bark for them to hide under.

2. Temperature: Isopods prefer temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Keep their habitat out of direct sunlight and away from drafts.

3. Humidity: Isopods require high humidity levels to survive. Mist their enclosure with water regularly to keep the substrate moist.

4. Food: Isopods are scavengers and will eat a variety of organic matter, such as leaf litter, decaying wood, and vegetables. You can feed them scraps of fruits and vegetables, fish food, or specialized isopod diets.

5. Clean-up: Isopods are great at cleaning up waste in a terrarium or vivarium. However, removing uneaten food or feces is essential to prevent mold growth.

Overall, isopods are low-maintenance pets that can help keep your terrarium clean and healthy. With proper care, they can live for several years.

Each order contains a minimum of 10 juvenile/baby isopods mixed.  We also include a culture starter cup (which contains a medium and small piece of food, for housing the isopods if you are not directly adding them to your vivarium).
