Provide Your Reptile with a Classic, Nutritious Snack: Live Mealworms!

Reptile Deli's Mealworms are a staple in the world of live feeder insects, and for good reason. These tiny, crunchy larvae of the Tenebrio molitor beetle are an excellent source of protein, fat, and essential nutrients, making them a fantastic dietary component for a wide variety of insectivorous reptiles, amphibians, and even small mammals and birds.

Their hard exoskeleton and busy, wiggling nature make them a stimulating and satisfying treat for pets. They are the perfect size for smaller lizards like leopard geckos, as well as a great supplementary snack for larger species. Our mealworms are carefully raised and packaged to ensure they arrive healthy and ready to be a delicious and beneficial part of your pet's diet.

Key Features:

  • Rich in Nutrients: A good source of protein and fat, supporting healthy growth and energy levels.

  • Easy to Digest: The chitinous exoskeleton is digestible, offering a satisfying crunch.

  • Simple to Store: Mealworms are one of the easiest feeders to care for, with a long shelf life.

  • Versatile Feeder: Suitable for a wide range of animals, from reptiles and amphibians to birds and arachnids.

A Quick Care Guide for Your Reptile Deli Mealworms

Keeping your mealworms healthy and dormant is a simple process that will extend their life and ensure they remain a viable food source for your pet.

1. Housing:

  • Container: Upon arrival, you can keep them in the provided container or transfer them to a shallow, smooth-sided plastic tub. A lid with small ventilation holes or a mesh screen is ideal.

  • Substrate: Add a layer of wheat bran, cornmeal, or old-fashioned oats. This substrate acts as both their bedding and their primary food source.

2. Temperature and Hydration:

  • Temperature: Unlike many other feeders, mealworms can be stored in the refrigerator! This is the best way to keep them in a dormant state, which slows their metabolism and prevents them from pupating. A temperature of 40-50°F (4-10°C) is perfect. DO NOT freeze them.

  • Water: Mealworms get most of their hydration from their food. You can add small slices of potato, carrot, or zucchini to the container a couple of times a week. Make sure to remove any uneaten pieces after 24 hours to prevent mold.

3. Preparing for Feeding:

  • About 24 hours before you plan to feed them to your pet, remove the desired amount from the refrigerator and allow them to warm up to room temperature. This will "wake" them up and get them moving. You can also "gut-load" them during this time with Reptile Deli's Bug Eats or fresh vegetables to boost their nutritional value.
